What is Adaptive Clothing?
A recent phenomenon in the retail industry is the growth and popularity of adaptive clothing, designed specifically for children and adults with special needs or disabilities. Adaptive clothing assists both those who have a small medical condition and those who have more severe conditions which might restrict the use of conventional clothing. Some conditions include:
- Limited motor control
- Irregular limb growth
- Wheelchair bound
- Bladder control issues
- Down syndrome
- Trisomy 18
- Spina Bifida Occulta
- Tethered spinal cord
- Multi Sclerosis (MS)
- And more.
Adaptive clothing is designed with these children and adults in mind. Creating clothing with a slight modification, making life easier and practical, while still looking fashionable and comfortable!
Recently in the retail market we have seen an increase in adaptive apparel brands modifying clothes by designing front closing bras, side opening pants, seamless socks, elastic bands instead of zips and tag-less shirts to assist those in need.
Why it’s great!
Adaptive clothing has helped so many children, adults and elderly to overcome the challenges associated with dressing themselves. Not only has it assisted in making getting dressed easier, adaptive clothing has also designed clothing that solves problems people face when suffering from a specific illness. Adaptive clothing is here to bring those suffering from a medical condition the ability to put on clothing themselves, be more comfortable, dress fashionably, all while feeling great.
Not only is it giving special needs children and adults confidence, it’s also great for parents and caregivers who are supporting people who may be unable to dress themselves or need that something extra on their clothes to make life easier.
What companies are making adaptive clothing?
Other great brands joining the adaptive clothing team include Tommy Hilfiger and Nike. Actress Selma Blair recently announced that she will be partnering with an adaptable clothing brand to assist those with special needs. Blair stated in a recent interview after being diagnosed with MS “I’m happy, and if I can help anyone be more comfortable in their skin, it’s more than I’ve ever done before," she expressed. This is what it is all about, helping those in need.
Hidden Underwear is part of the Adaptive Clothing phenomenon.
At Hidden we created My Private Pocket to assist those suffering from incontinence issues. Many children and adults suffer from loss of bladder or intestine control due to a number of medical conditions.
My Private Pocket underwear is designed with children in mind who suffer from incontinence. Providing children with confidence knowing that they are prepared when little accidents occur. A private pocket sewn into the underwear to keep all your necessary supplies - spare undies, wipes, catheter and more.
Hidden. Not noticed. Ready for when that bathroom accident occurs.
Why did you create My Private Pocket?
We created My Private Pocket because we have experienced the struggles that children face when suffering from incontinence. At birth our daughter Bella, was diagnosed with Spina Bifida Occulta, at age 5 she began having incontinence problems. After trying different products and not finding anything suitable on the market we decided to solve the problem and design My Private Pocket. Bella is now much more confident, comfortable and happy knowing that she has her Hidden underwear ready to go when those little bathroom emergencies occur.
Adaptable clothing is becoming more and more popular, fashionable and comfortable. Adaptive Clothing is giving special needs children and adults the confidence and happiness that they deserve.
